Finials FAQ
- What are architectural finials?
- Architectural finials are decorative structures that provide a vertical termination to a building or structure. There are an endless number of possible designs, with the simplest ones probably being spherical and tapered architectural finials. The rounded decorative caps that appear on top of fence posts are also architectural finials.
- Where can architectural finials typically be found?
- Architectural finials are featured as a design element in many different types of buildings, including government buildings, academic institutions, private homes, churches, and hospitality locations. Often, they are placed at the highest point of a building, so they may appear on top of church spires, cupolas, flat roofs, or roof gables, for example. They can also be found on top of fence posts.
- Why have architectural finials remained so popular over the centuries?
- One reason for their popularity is that they can enhance the look of almost any type of building. They're compatible with many different exterior designs and styles, so they appeal to many people. Second, architectural finials are a really simple way to dramatically improve the look of a structure. They don't involve the same type of financial investment as other features like cupolas or domes, and they can work well on smaller structures without completely overpowering them.
- When were architectural finials first used?
- Architectural finials have been used for centuries. The castles associated with the late Middle Ages and feudal society were the first to include architectural finials in their design. They were quite simple, and were little more than thin stone projections placed on top of the castle's towers and walls. Even at this time, architectural finials served no practical purpose and were entirely decorative in nature.
- Why do so many churches have architectural finials?
- One reason is that many churches are inspired by the Romanesque and Gothic architectural movements. These buildings are characterized by their impressive height and their use of towers, spires, and architectural finials, and many modern churches still include these elements in their architectural design. In addition, many churches are designed to be as tall as possible because this height symbolizes reaching towards God. Architectural finials help designers achieve these desired heights.
- What should I look for when choosing a material for architectural finials?
- Ideally, any materials used for architectural finials should require little to no maintenance. Repairing architectural finials will usually involve climbing onto roofs, and that can be quite inconvenient and dangerous. You also want to find a material that is strong. The last thing you want is your finial cracking or breaking when it is exposed to high winds. In addition, you want materials that are weather resistant. Architectural finials will be continuously exposed to the elements, so you want to find a material that can withstand this.
- What are some common designs for architectural finials?
- Although many designs are possible, some architectural finial designs are more common then others. Spherical and tapered designs are common choices. Many architectural finials also incorporate a combination of these two shapes. Much more elaborate designs, however, are also possible.
- If I choose an architectural finial from a catalogue, will the finished product look exactly like the one on the picture?
- Truthfully, it depends on where you order the architectural finial from. If the company uses methods like carving or turning, small variations in the design may occur. If you choose Stromberg, however, the finished product will be identical to the one in the catalogue. Because they use molds to produce their stock designs, the texture, shape, and size of the finished product will be exactly the same each and every time.
- What types of architectural finials does Stromberg offer?
- We have a number of stock designs, and many of our customers can find a design they like. However, most of the architectural finials we develop are custom made. We can develop custom finials that are the exact style, texture, size, and color you want. In other words, we offer a virtually unlimited number of choices of architectural finials.
- What if I order a custom finial from Stromberg and I'm not pleased with the finished product?
- Stromberg is a company that strives to please all of their clients, and we have developed our customized design process to reflect this. After we have received your instructions, we will develop a model of your architectural finial. We'll show you this model to ensure you're completely satisfied with the design. If not, we can make any adjustments at this time. Once we're sure you are happy, we will make the mold and, finally, the actual architectural finial. Unfortunately, our custom finials can not be returned, which is why we take every precaution to ensure you are satisfied before we cast your custom finial.
- Are GFRP finials superior to those made with other materials?
- In a number of ways, GFRP finials are superior to many other types of architectural finials. They are lightweight, meaning they won't place stress on the surrounding structure. They're also very strong, so they can withstand high winds and even extreme weather events. They can also be molded into practically any shape or texture imaginable, so the design possibilities are endless.
- What do GFRP finials look like?
- That is one of the major advantages of GFRP finials. GFRP is an extremely versatile material. It can be finished to replicate the look of a diverse range of materials, including copper, bronze, nickel, stainless steel, limestone, and numerous others. Typically, fiberglass finials will be more affordable than these materials, and an added advantage is that they won't rust, corrode, or crack like metal and stone can.
- What are the main advantages of GFRS finials made by Stromberg?
- Firstly, we realize that in order for GFRS to be a viable alternative to cut stone, it must be every bit as beautiful as the real thing. Our GFRS finials are made with real stone aggregate, so they look exactly like the real deal. However, since they are reinforced with lightweight fiberglass, they are much lighter than solid stone. With GFRS finials, there will be no problems with cracking, which can sometimes be an issue with cut stone. GFRS finials are available in a number of finishes, including buff and distressed.
- What are the advantages of GFRC finials made by Stromberg?
- GFRC looks exactly like pre-cast concrete. However, it's reinforced with fiberglass instead of steel, so it weighs much less. Another advantage of Stromberg's GFRC finials is that they will not swell, rot, or wear away the way that pre-cast concrete can. GFRC finials can be molded into a huge number of shapes and textures, and they are available in a special finish that can be painted, or they can be made to replicate the look of popular materials like terra cotta and limestone.
- I live in an area that receives a lot of rain. Will excessive moisture damage architectural finials?
- All of the materials used by Stromberg to make our stunning architectural finials are extremely weather resistant. Even acid rain and salt water do not damage these materials, so regular rain or snow will pose no problem at all.
- Why is Stromberg a good choice if I need to have architectural finials repaired?
- Stromberg's materials can be made to match the texture and color of surrounding structures. This allows us to make repairs that are virtually undetectable. In addition, when we use our strong, durable, and weather-resistant materials, chances are good that further repairs to these areas will never be needed.
- Which material is best for architectural finials?
- All of our materials are strong, durable, non-combustible, and weather-resistant, so the material that will be best for you really depends on the look you are trying to achieve. GFRC finials and GFRS finials are good choices if you want an architectural finial that looks like authentic concrete or cut stone. GFRP finials are more versatile in terms of the wide range of materials they can replicate. If you're having trouble deciding, one of Stromberg's experts can help you decide.
- How much do Stromberg's architectural finials cost?
- The price can vary greatly, depending on whether the finial is custom made or a stock design, the size of the finial, and many other factors. Therefore, it is impossible to provide an accurate investment until we speak to you and find out exactly what type of architectural finials you are interested in.
